| Helpful Hints |
Keep in mind this is the same sewing machine you may have used for years. Every piece of equipment has it's own quirks and they won't change just because it is now used on a Pennywinkle frame in place of a sewing cabinet. |

Maybe the best hint of all is practice, practice, practice... |
Tension - I find that I need to tighten the tension. |
Strong Needle - In most cases I recommend using a #14 needle. This is because you are pushing and pulling the machine so a stronger needle is needed. |
Quality Thread - Start off with good quality polyester thread because it is stronger. |
Presser Foot - I use a darning or quilting foot. If you experience problems such as thread or needles breaking go back to using the original (dress maker) foot that came with your sewing machine. |
Slow Down - Practice moving your machine at a slow steady pace until you get nice even stiches. |
Piece quilt backs horizontally. |
Make the quilt back longer and wider than the quilt top, |
Lots of Pins - When setting in quilts use lots of pins, and be sure to take lots of time. |
Velcro - I have put a piece of Velcro on the handles and a strip on the bottom of my foot control to keep it from falling on the floor. |
Planning - Plan your quilt and quilt your plan. Your work area is small so use a pattern that can be divided or merged. |
Straighter Lines - For diagonal lines I use a ruler for a guide against the pressure foot. |
Keep Work Area Flat - When setting up your Pennywinkle quilting system, make sure the working area of your quilt is flat against the deck of your sewing machine. This will help to keep the needle from making a poping sound. |
Keep Edges Taut - Be sure to pull the sides taut, this allows you to quilt to the edges. |
More Control - If you need more control on a detailed area, set your hand on top of your quilt on the deck area of your sewing machine. I also find it helpful to sit down and place the foot control on the floor. |
